Steve Parry - 2004 Olympic Medallist

Saturday 19th January 2008 - Lancing College 6 - 10 p.m.

Steve Parry won Olympic Bronze at Athens in 2004 for one of the most gruelling events, the 200 metres butterfly. He also has Commonwealth and European medals.

31 swimmers participated in the first training session with Steve, with ages ranging from 7 - 11 years and 33 of our older swimmers took part in the second session.

Steve's sessions focussed on a number of key points including ensuring the swimmers did a thorough warm up, keep positive throughout training and competitions as well as more technical points such as the importance of streamlining during swimming.

Steve had a great ability to keep the interest of the swimmers, with a very vocal session with the younger swimmers, being encouraged to chant and celebrate good performances.

In the transition between the 2 sessions, Steve gave stories about his many years as a swimmer, his determination to win a medal at the Olympics whilst swimming against the mighty Michael Phelps and talked about the day he met the Queen.

Emma Piper (Girls Captain) and Alastair Hardinge (Boys Captain) presented Steve with an engraved salva to thank him for coming to visit us all the way from Manchester (277 miles away)

After signing autograph cards and having his photo taken, many times with the excited swimmers, it was time for Steves return to Manchester.

It was a very successful event and should be great inspiration for the 64 swimmers that were involved. It followed on from the event that we held with James Hickman nearly 2 years ago.

Thanks to Total Swimming for the organisation of the session, to the swimmers that took part in the session and the supporting parents and helpers.

Events such as these need your support to make them successful

Round 3 Rother League.
Saturday 22nd September 2007

Worthing put in a strong performance under the guidance of Nic Piper and Phil Jones in their 1st League Gala as Head Coaches. Worthing finished 4th on the evening against tough opposition.

There were a number of good individual performances with a handful of 1st places as well as a number of relay wins.

This result showed the potential of the current gala squad who can now look forward to the Speedo League Galas in October, November and December.

Thankyou to all of those swimmers that made the effort to attend the gala, despite it being up at Basingstoke again.

15th September 2007

WSC swimmers in attendance were Charlotte Barnett, Joe Hazeldine and Alastair Hardinge.

All of the swimmers entered 4 or more races so had a long swimming day.

Joe won 4 of his 5 races in personal best times, Charlotte was 5th in the 50 metres backstroke and Alastair’s best position was 10th which was reflective of his age group being 15 and over, with Alastair being just 15.

Well done to Joe, Charlotte and Alastair for their efforts at this open meet.

Pavillions in the Park - (Horsham)
Sussex League Round 3.

On Saturday 7th July 2007, Worthing Swimming Club had a gala against Hastings and Atlantis (Horsham)
Having won the 1st 2 rounds of galas, 2nd place was likely to have resulted in promotion back into division 1.
Unfortunately Horsham and Hastings were too strong on the night despite some good swims from our gala squad.
The result secured us 3rd place overall in the Sussex League Division 2 for 2007, with Eastbourne and Atlantis being promoted.
Well done to all of the squad for getting so close to promotion to division 1 and keep working hard towards the final Rother League Gala for 2007 on September 22nd.

Sea Swim Photo

Sea Swim 15 July 2007 - Photo Album.

Worthing Swimming Clubs Annual Sea Swim was held on Sunday 15th July 2007
starting at 1 p.m from Worthing Lido. The mayor of Worthing - Heather
Mercer started the womens race 1st,
with a few minutes gap until the mens race was started. The Ladies swam a
distance of 400 metres west of the lido,
whereas the men swam 800 metres towards the Burlington hotel.

The ladies race was won by Girls Captain Zoe Yeandle in a time of 5 minutes
29 seconds, 24 seconds clear of Rianna Poppeliers in 2nd.
There were 6 competitors in the race including Zoe's mum Nikki Yeandle who
finished 6th in 8 minutes 30.

The mens race was won by Boys Captain Chris Luesley in 7 Minutes 56, with
Stuart Stirling 2nd in 8 Minutes 51.
With a personal best over the same distance of 10 minutes in a pool, the
time of under 8 minutes highlights how significant
the strength of the tide was, especially for those swimmers that chose to
swim further out to sea.

Both races were greatly affected by the strong easterly wind and current
that were both of benefit to the swimmers.
The times in last Years race on the otherhand were significantly affected
by the headwind that caused quite rough conditions.
Although the weather this year has been adverse, the sun managed to shine
for the race and the sea wasn't as cold as you would expect
during such a poor summer.

Congratulations to all the swimmers for taking part and special mention to
John Matthews who won the clubs 1st sea swim 40 years ago in 1967
and managed 5th place in this years race. A fantastic achievement.

Ladies Results
1st Zoe Yeandle 5 Min 29
2nd Rianna Poppeliers 5 Min 53
3rd Elizabeth Fairs 6 Min 07
4th Karen Wardley 6 Min 08

Bognor Open Long Distance Meet

Posted 23 December 2006

Summary of Bognor Open Long Distance Meet

On Sunday 10th December 2006, 6 Worthing swimmers attended the Bognor long
distance open meet.
Joe Hazeldine, Amy Quach, Alex Milner, Sarah Blacker, Zoe Yeandle and Chris
Luesley all attended the meet.
All of the races were swum over 200 metres for each of the strokes, with
age groups being 9 - 11 years, 12 - 13 years and 14+
With Shiverers and Portsmouth Northsea, being some of the clubs in
attendance and some of the swimmers
being the youngest in their age group, medal opportunities were always
going to be limited.
In the last 2 events of the evening, Chris Luesley finished 2nd in the 14+
Years 200 metres butterfly and Zoe Yeandle
was 3rd in the same event.

Well done to all the swimmers who attended this event and achieved
excellent personal bests.

Speedo League Round 3

Posted 23 December 2006

On Saturday 9th December 2006, Worthing participated in the final
round of the Speedo League Division 2 West league.
Having qualified for the final 6 in 5th place, there was still a good
chance of promotion. However, 3rd place or above would be needed to achieve
this feat.

1st   Tilehurst         219 (Promoted)
2nd   Slough                  217 (Promoted)
3rd   Portsmouth Northsea     171 (Promoted)
4th   Rushmoor Royals B 151
5th   Worthing          148
6th   Cranleigh         140

Worthing finished in 5th place on the night. (See Speedo Website for League
details)
Just 23 points separated Worthing from Portsmouth Northsea who were the 3rd
promoted
team along with the 2 dominant teams of Tilehurst and Slough.
The achievements of Ziggy Tate, Scott Martin and Joel Abbott getting into
the GB junior water Polo squad
meant that they were unavailable for this crucial gala due to training in
Walsall.
With several swimmers swimming out of age and in strokes that may not be
their best,
every effort was made to keep with Portsmouth Northsea.

Not through lack of effort, the weakened mens open team struggled on the
night,
an area in which the promoted Northsea were very strong.

This is the 2nd year running that Worthing have nearly been promoted from
this league.

'3rd time lucky' springs to mind for next year.
Meanwhile, attention turns to the forthcoming Sussex League in March,
where promotion is also hoped for.

Well done to all those that have swum in the squad in all competitions this
year
Keep working hard in training and Worthing will 1 day achieve division 1
status
in both the Speedo and Sussex Leagues.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Speedo League Round 2

Posted 14 November 2006

Speedo League Round 2 held at Reading on 11/11/06

1st   Tilehurst               219
2nd   Portsmouth Northsea           203
3rd   Worthing                185
4th   Reading B               160
5th   Wey Valley              158
6th   Romsey & Totton         119

This was an entertaining evening of swimming with the highlight of the
evening being an outstanding performance
in the girls 6 * 50 metre freestyle relay which resulted in 1st place.
Tilehurst and Portsmouth Northsea proved too strong on the night as
Worthing added 3rd place to the 2nd place
gained in round 1.
This result should now ensure that Worthing are well placed in the top 6 in
Division 2 West ready for
the final gala in December with 3 promotion places up for grabs. Worthing
secured 9 race victories and 9
2nd places on the evening. There was only 1 disqualification which is a
vast improvement from the 6 experienced in the 1st round
and comes as a result of increased practice of those errors in training.
Wey Valley were lucky enough to gain from Worthings disqualifications in
gala 1 where they came 1st.
However, in round 2 they only managed 5th place so Worthing are now placed
above
them in the current league table and this highlights how important it is
not to have any disqualifications during races.

Well done and Thank You to all swimmers, helpers and for the fine support
from parents.

Cranleigh Open Meet Review

Posted 20 October 2006

On Sunday 8th October 2006, 10 swimmers from WSC attended the Cranleigh Open meet,
held at the Cranleigh pool. Every Worthing swimmer won at least 1 medal in their own age group.
Most notably, Alastair Hardinge won 5 Gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal in his age group.
Joe Hazeldine and Sam Wildman both picked up a speeding ticket for being too fast in their age group
in 200 Metres Butterfly and 200 Metres Backstroke respectively.

In addition to this, most of the swims by the 10 swimmers were in personal best times.
Congratulations to all those involved on the day in winning so many medals.

Aspire "Channel" Swim

On Wednesday 13th September 2006, Chris Luesley, Boys Captain and Swimming Teacher at Worthing Swimming Club attempted to swim the equivalent distance of the English Channel in the Aquarena pool. The challenge involved covering 22 miles which is 1,078 lengths in a day. After a number of refreshment stops and with very achey arms, Chris completed the challenge in 12 hours and 55 minutes which was marked by a round of applause from everyone who was in the Aquarena at the end, swimmers, staff and gym class members. The challenge raised approximately £580 for the Aspire Spinal Charity. Any swimmer who would also like to complete the challenge has until the beginning of December to do so. See www.aspire.org.uk/channelswim for further details.

Portsmouth Pier to Pier sea swim.

As a warm up for the Aspire Challenge, Chris Luesley swam in the Annual Portsmouth Pier to Pier sea swim on 10th September 2006. Against a strong high tide, Chris completed the 1.25 mile swim in just over 31 minutes and came 5th in the Mens race. If you are interested in open water swimming, see Chris for more details about entering races next summer. 13 years and older only.

South East Masters Championships

On Saturday 23rd September 2006, Chris Luesley participated in the South East Region Masters competition held at Haslemere pool. Swimming in the 25 – 29 year old category, Chris secured a full set of medals, with 1 Gold, 1 Silver and 1 Bronze. The Gold came in the 50 metres freestyle and the time will stand as a South East Region record as the event is in its inaugural year after the change from the old Southern Counties region.

Rother League Round 3 Gala Review

Posted 28 September 2006

The 3rd and final Rother League gala was held at Hart Leisure Centre at Fleet on Saturday 23rd September 2006. After a fairly long coach journey to the venue, Worthing had a slow start in the pool before moving our way up to 3rd place by the end. This was an encouraging result against all of the teams in our division. Worthing finished all 3 galas in the Rother League in 3rd place which should enable us to retain our position in Division 2 and improve our ranking within the division. The gala was won by Staines who have dominated the division and look likely to gain promotion to division 1.

Congratulations to Alastair Hardinge and Florence Scordoulis who were given the individual awards for Worthing in the Rother League.

The results which have been achieved are due to a great team effort, with some swimmers swimming out of age and having to cover those that have been ill or unable to swim.

The form shown in this league now has to be carried forward to the Speedo League which starts in 3 weeks time (14th October) – Good Luck everyone !!!
