6-7/11/2010 - Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth

This short course 25m competition was held in the new Mountbatten Centre 50m pool at Portsmouth.

Top swimmers from all over the South East region were attracted to this swimming meet. There is only one set of qualifying times for both Junior and Open categories. The standard and quality is very high indeed.

Two swimmers from the Club entered the Winter Regional with Karen Chan qualified and competed in 3 events and Alexander Cranford qualified for 8 and competed in 3 events. Both achieved personal best in one of their events and respectable times in the rest.

Karen has bettered her time in 50m Back and broke both Age and Open Club Record.

Alexander has done even better cutting over 4 seconds off his 400m IM time and broke the Age and Open Club Record. He has also broken the Age Club Record in 50m Back and Breast. The Age Club Record for 16 years 50m Breast was held by David Boothby back in 1988; over 12 years ago.

Well done to both of them!

17/10/2010 - Ponds Forge International Sports Centre, Sheffield

Karen Chan and Joe Hazeldine were selected to represent the County. They travelled with the team on a coach from Sussex and stayed at Rotherham on Saturday. So it is only a short distance to Sheffield the next day.

Karen Chan managed to swim close to her PB in the 100 Back even with an injured ankle just 4 days ago. She also swam the Back stroke in the 200 Medley relay.

Joe Hazeldine did well to swim a Personal Best in the 100 Back and broke the Age Club Record in the process. He also swam the Back stroke in the 200 Medley relay.

The competition between the 20 counties in division one was very intense. In the end, Lancashire continue to dominate with a ninth consecutive Intercounties title and Sussex stay in division one.

More report at the ASA website. Photos available at the County website.

Big well done to all. The day started early and all the signs were
good. Programme laid out well the sun was showing signs of
shining through the glass front and after the warm ups we

Rebecca Harman was first up for Worthing IN THE 200M
Backstroke. This was a good start as a 4 second Personal Best
was achieved. This continued for most of the day with swimmers
performing beyond their previous best time. Medals started to
come and some minor errors as one swimmer received a faster
time by 6 seconds in the final placing that in the event. Goes to
show you can swim faster than time itself at Worthing.

With the 56 events entered by Worthing a very high majority
were PBs which is fantastic. It is worth mentioning that a focus
on the technique first then effort second keeps everything in
check as sometimes simple things get forgotten. Remember
effort behind the technique and not before and those times will
get better and better.

It was good to see smiling faces and a happy atmosphere as
swimming can be so challenging.

One particular smiling face was Charlie Hepworth. Charlie has
been working hard over the last month with a change to his Front
crawl stroke. This finally paid off. This resulted in over 3 seconds
off his 50 metre entry time and in the 100m Front Crawl a further
8 seconds. This is one of many success stories of the day but
highlights the importance of getting the technique right.

To all swimmers keep up the hard work as next time success will
be waiting for you.

Big thank you to Karen Wardley for helping without such help
these open meets would not run so smoothly.

Many thanks

23/1/2010 GALA 1 REPORT

The first Gala took us to Haywards Heath to face two of the top teams in Sussex Crawley and East Grinstead.

Having secured promotion by winning Division Two last year we needed no reminding that being in the top division amongst the best in the County was never going to be easy.

We managed to secure 8 wins out right, although the official results are still to be sent through, making other clubs take note that we are no pushover and we continued to be in the mix on many races showing that we are up for the challenge. I believe we deserve to be in the top flight and as a club we are improving, becoming stronger thanks to all the hard work by all the coaching and teaching staff.

This is only round 1 and with 274 points we go to the next round at Worthing on the 30th January for our next challenge.

A big thank you goes to all the swimmers of the team for giving it their all. A special thanks to those who made the effort to travel back from the Portsmouth open meet along with the swimmers who had to swim up and those that had to swim numerous events. I and the team are very thankful. Also to those who competed for the first time. Remember this is only round one and I am confident we will improve on the 274 points gained so far.

Being up against the best swimmers in the county please do not be intimidated by those around you. With all your hard training, remember when you get up on that block you have the ability, so believe in yourself as I certainly believe in you. Focus only on your lane, attack the turns and finish the race hard, racing the clock all the way. Please continue to show your support for the team by cheering on the swimmers in the pool. We are a team and you should all be proud to swim for Worthing.

As the next round is a home Gala please bring all the family and friends down to cheer us on. I want to raise the roof with the cries of

Many thanks
